In today's fast-paced world, operators of equipment are faced with a barrage of distractions. From environmental interruptions to diversions on the control panel itself, the commotion can seem never ending. Operators need all the help they can get in cutting through the clutter, which is where the innovations in NKK's OLED SmartSwitch come into play.
 
NKK Prod of Year Smart SwitchThe OLED SmartSwitch is a high resolution programmable pushbutton switch operated by commands and data supplied via the SPI communications protocol. It offers many advantages over conventional LCD programmable switches which help users remain focused on the task at hand and prevent accidental actuations. One of the most impressive of these advantages is that the OLED SmartSwitch has 50 percent greater contrast, resulting in sharper picture quality for easy viewing of even the smallest characters. This means that the message sent to operators is clear and that they can be confident in what action is required of them. It also means engineers have even greater flexibility in their designs. Additional innovations found in the OLED SmartSwitch include 180 degree viewing angles and full-motion video and full color capability. In fact, the programmable and changeable OLED module displays 65,536 colors in 16 bit mode, and 256 colors in 8 bit mode.
 
In addition, the OLED SmartSwitch offers design engineers lower power consumption rates than other illuminated switches, as well as faster response times and no backlighting requirements. The wide 15.5mm x 11.6mm (horizontal x vertical) viewing area is also capable of 64RGB x 48 pixel, four times more enhanced resolution than that of conventional programmable switches.

Berg 8 SubstrateThermal Clad substrates minimize thermal impedance and conduct heat more effectively and efficiently than standard printed wiring boards (PWB's). These substrates are more mechanically robust than thick-film ceramics and direct bond copper constructions that are often used in these applications.

Additional benefits of Thermal Clad include lower operating temperatures, longer life and more durability.

Bergquist Thermal Clad substrates are not limited to use with metal base layers. In one example power conversion applications can enhance their performance by replacing FR-4 with Thermal Clad dielectrics in multi-layer assemblies. In this application the thickness of the copper circuit layer can be minimized by the high thermal performance of Thermal Clad.

Thermal Clad is a versatile substrate. In this motor control application, the dielectric has been selectively removed and the metal base has been formed with three-dimensional features.

Improve Durability and Performance
Thermal Clad improves durability because designs can be kept simple while components are kept cool. The low thermal impedance of the Thermal Clad dielectric out-performs other insulators for power components allowing cooler operation. Thermal Clad keeps assemblies cool by eliminating thermal interfaces and using thermally efficient solder joints. Voltage breakdown and thermal performance improve in potted assemblies using SMDs and bare die on Thermal Clad. Thermal Clad can also reduce production costs by enabling automated pick-and-place equipment for SMDs.


Reduce Board Size and Replace Hardware

Thermal Clad greatly reduces board space while replacing other components including heat sinks. It offers the opportunity to eliminate mica and grease or rubber insulators under power devices by using direct solder mount to Thermal Clad. In eliminating this older hardware, heat transfer improves. Interconnects can be eliminated by using etched traces on the Thermal Clad board. In fact, whole sections of PWBs are often eliminated. It permits using surface mount power and passive devices to reduce real estate requirements. With Thermal Clad, many discrete devices can be replaced at the board level.

The Anatomy of a Thermal Clad Board

Circuit Layer This is the printed circuit foil with thickness of 1oz to 10oz (35-350”m) in standard Thermal Clad. Dielectric Layer This offers electrical isolation with minimum thermal resistance. The multiple-layer dielectric is the key element of Thermal Clad, and bonds the base metal and circuit metal together. The dielectric has UL recognition, simplifying agency acceptance of final assemblies.

Base Layer
This is often aluminum, but other metals such as copper may also be used. The most widely used base material thickness is 0.062" (1.6mm) in aluminum, although many thicknesses are available. In some applications, the base layer of metal may not be needed.

    The use of an AstraLED RGB can result in up to a 30% cost savings , as well as 67% real estate package savings when compared to the use of individual high power red, green and blue packages. The use of a single RGB package also enhances production efficiencies as a single part number eliminates the need for three separate LED part numbers.
    The high-power AstraLED RGB provides color rendering performance that is superior to traditional phosphor converted high-power white LED technologies. This feature offers enhanced color consistency and is especially beneficial in both consumer and commercial
appliance lighting applications that require warm white that closely matches incandescent lighting, such as accent lighting or landscape lighting.
    The RoHS compliant AstraLED RGB provides ultra-bright, full-color output in a 3-Watt high-power package. AstraLED RGBs deliver light intensity of 25/25/8 lumens respectively at 300mA (red), 350mA (green) and 350mA (blue) of current with an
